The construction sector is undergoing a significant change in its preferences and approaches, driven by a greater interest in sustainability and reducing environmental impact. Consumers are increasingly committed to finding solutions that are not only functional but also environmentally responsible. This trend has led to the creation of new sustainable materials, many of which are revolutionising the industry.

As environmental challenges intensify, sustainable construction has emerged as a global priority. New generations of materials are evolving to be more environmentally friendly, efficient, and aesthetically appealing. This has led to the creation of new recycled surfaces, such as those developed from industrial waste, which offer advantages not only in terms of sustainability but also in durability and performance.

Why choose recycled materials in sustainable construction?

Recycled materials have become a key option for achieving more sustainable construction, reducing environmental impact without compromising quality or design. Here are the main advantages:

  • Waste reduction: the use of recycled materials helps to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, promoting the circular economy.
  • Conservation of natural resources: recycling existing products reduces the need to extract new resources, helping to preserve ecosystems and natural resources.
  • Reduced carbon footprint: the production processes for these products can generate fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional methods.
  • Design innovation: these materials allow for the creation of unique surfaces and structures that combine functionality and aesthetics in an innovative way.
  • Compliance with environmental regulations: their use can contribute to compliance with environmental regulations and certifications, such as LEED or BREEAM, which reward sustainability in construction.

What is MUD?

MUD is a new collection from Krion® LUX that combines elegance and functionality with a deep focus on sustainability. Inspired by the natural beauty of the earth, this series contains both pre-consumer and post-consumer recycled materials in its composition, offering a responsible and environmentally friendly alternative for construction. MUD achieves a unique aesthetic that emulates the texture of clay and the strength of rock formations, while responding to the needs of an increasingly environmentally conscious world.

In terms of design options, MUD is available in a range of warm-toned, mineral-looking models that reflect the essence of the earth in a contemporary way. These are:

  • Kaolin: a warm ivory tone with stone grey and light brown particles that evoke the softness of limestone and sun-lit dunes. Ideal for serene and timeless spaces, it combines elegance and naturalness with a neutral and versatile aesthetic.
  • Marga: inspired by desert landscapes and golden sands, this warm shade between beige and terracotta integrates grey and white mineral fragments that add visual depth. A welcoming colour that invites calm, perfect for bright and enveloping interiors.
  • Greda: with a soft brown base and particles that simulate stone and granite, this design is reminiscent of moist, fertile soils. Its earthy and balanced appearance offers sophistication without ostentation, ideal for warm, natural and contemporary environments.
  • Siena: a tribute to the most intense, reddish, rich and vibrant clay soil. This deep shade with grey, white and black inlays conveys strength, identity and a connection with the ancestral. Perfect for projects that seek personality and character without losing functionality or elegance.

Ecocycle® and RC: new technologies for recycled materials

Beyond specific materials, the move towards more sustainable construction is also driven by the development of new technologies that enable the creation of more responsible and environmentally friendly products. Among the most notable technologies are Ecocycle® and RC, which are transforming the way building materials are produced and how waste is efficiently incorporated.

Ecocycle®

Ecocycle® is a technology developed by Krion® that allows the recycling of surplus material generated during the manufacture of Krion® LUX sheets. Instead of being discarded, these material scraps are collected and transformed into small chips that are incorporated into new sheets. This technology reduces waste and incorporates up to 40% recycled material, while maintaining the technical and aesthetic properties of the original product. This approach not only improves the sustainability of the production process, but also contributes to a more efficient circular economy.

Recycled Content

RC is the process of recovering post-consumer resins, in which waste from previously used products is reincorporated into the production of Krion® surfaces. This approach gives new life to materials that would otherwise have been discarded, helping to reduce waste and promote the circular economy.

The use of this technology is reflected in products such as RC Krion® K-Life 1100, the Luxury series and MUD, which incorporate at least 5% recycled material from post-consumer waste. With this action, we estimate that more than 350,000 kilos of recycled raw material will be used in the manufacture of its products this year, ensuring more responsible production without compromising the quality or properties of the material.

MUD applications in sustainable projects

MUD is transforming construction by offering a wide range of applications, from residential to commercial projects, including hospitals, offices and other public spaces. Its ability to adapt to different design needs, its durability and ease of maintenance make it an ideal choice for a wide variety of projects. In addition, its versatility allows this material to be used on both horizontal and vertical surfaces, providing aesthetic and functional solutions for any type of space.

Advantages of solid surface in projects

Solid surface offers a number of advantages that make it the ideal choice for a wide range of applications in sustainable construction:

  • Visual and functional continuity: this material allows for joints without visible seams, creating monolithic surfaces that are ideal for wet or high-traffic areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Hygiene: thanks to its bacteriostatic properties, solid surface prevents the proliferation of microorganisms, making it particularly suitable for spaces such as hospitals, commercial kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Repairability: the material has excellent resistance to small cracks and surface damage. Any scratches or damage can be easily restored by sanding, extending the life of the material without the need to replace parts.
  • Thermoforming: solid surface can be moulded into curves, making it an excellent solution for wraparound designs or custom adaptations in complex projects.
  • Aesthetic stability: it offers high resistance to exposure to moisture or UV light, ensuring that the material maintains its appearance and properties over time, even in outdoor or high-exposure environments.
  • Aesthetic variety: with a wide range of colours and finish options, including backlighting, solid surface allows for complete customisation to suit any design style.
  • Zero moisture absorption: its compact and homogeneous structure prevents the penetration of liquids, making it easy to clean and maintain, even in high-traffic spaces such as bathrooms, kitchens and public areas.

It's time to take the next step towards a more sustainable design. MUD by Krion® LUX invites you to explore new solutions that combine aesthetics, functionality and environmental responsibility. Discover all our material options and transform your project in a responsible way.
