The increase in industrial manufacturing and transportation that requires fuel burning to operate, drives the increase in the levels of pollution in the air. Proof of this can be found in a recent study that states that 92% of people breathe in contaminated air which is harmful to their health.

The high percentages of harmful components in the atmosphere could cause an environmental health crisis that requires specific sustainable reactions. To achieve this, at KRIONTM, we study and learn from the wisest source of them all: nature.

Here at KRIONTM, we believe that small changes can lead to a better world, so we work towards offering solutions to improve people's lives and their surroundings. Since it was developed in 2010, the KRIONTM solid surface now has a more advanced composition than any other mineral compact on the market.

Over the years, this composition has been improved in order to offer sustainable surfaces. To achieve this, the R & D KRIONTM department has focused its base on the studies carried out by Akira Fujishima and Kenichi Onda back in 1972. These studies analysed how certain minerals reacted to sunlight creating a photocatalytic effect.

What is photocatalysis?

Photocatalysis occurs when light hits the surface of certain minerals like titanium oxide, causing it to come into contact with the humidity and oxygen in the environment. From this mixture, molecules (hydroxyl radicals) which have the ability to join to other contaminating particles in the environment, produce complex molecules that are not harmful to humans.

As a result of these activators, and after studies that guarantee that they work on surfaces, we developed and patented the KEAST technology: Krion Eco Active Solid Technology. From this innovative technology, we saw the creation of the compact mineral KRIONTM from the purest white: KRIONTM K· LIFE 1100.

KRIONTM K · Life 1100: proven photocatalytic capacity

KRIONTM K·Life 1100 has easy cleaning and low maintenance features, due to its zero porosity and degradation capacity. The ISO 27448 standard concludes that this technology is more effective against stains and marks than any other solid surface on the market.

For its part, the ISO 10678 2010 regulation concludes that KRIONTM K·Life 1100 contributes to the elimination of a large number of compounds that are dangerous to our health, like pesticides.

The reaction to the proliferation of bacteria, microorganisms and fungi is a key characteristic for spaces that require aseptic atmospheres, namely: clinics or operating rooms. This reagent is demonstrated in the ISO 27447 2009 standard, which was carried out by the Valencian Microbiology Institute.

K·LIFE and its ability to purify the air

The KEAST technology goes a step further by extrapolating its benefits beyond its surface with its ability to decontaminate the air. Under the ISO 22197-1 200 standard supervised by the IPS institute, the most sustainable solid surface obtains 0.21. What does this value mean and how is it proven?

The experiment

To demonstrate the KRIONTM K·Life 1100 decontamination capacity , an experiment is carried out in collaboration with CEAM, a centre that has extensive experience in the evaluation of photocatalytic materials, and it has a EUPHORE reactor to carry out these tests with guarantees.

The experiment is carried out in a controlled atmosphere of 200m3 which includes 4.4m2 of solid surface (K·LIFE in the first study and another conventional solid surface in the 2nd study) which is shaped like a tabletop and eight chairs.

Next, high pollution values similar to those accumulated in large cities with contamination saturation (120PPBs of NOx) are injected and natural light is used to activate the photocatalytic effect of the surfaces.

The result of the study shows that, although in both cases the pollutants are greatly reduced as the hours went by, KRIONTM K·Life 1100 cleans the air up to 12.5% in each measurement time segment, purifying a total of 40% more air than the other compact mineral at the end of the experiment.
