Krion® LUX: the importance of working with a material that guarantees safety

2023-04-06.

At Krion, we take safety very seriously. That is why we have created a solid surface with guarantees, which is not only harmless from its creation to the end of its useful life, but also during its recovery process.

A material that has accumulated numerous certifications that guarantee its quality and safety.

Let's analyse how Krion® Solid Surface is a safe material for the health of our factory workers, for the processor, the end user, and also for the environment.

What will you learn in this article?

Composition of Krion® LUX

Before delving into the safety guarantees offered by Krion® LUX, it is essential to understand its composition. This material is obtained from a combination of aluminium trihydrate, a natural mineral derived from bauxite, with minimal amounts of latest-generation acrylic resins. The result is a homogeneous mass that produces stable, compact sheets with almost zero porosity, ensuring uniform distribution of colour, texture and technical properties throughout its thickness.

Thanks to this composition, Krion® LUX can be worked as a continuous unit: it can be cut, sanded, joined and thermoformed without altering its colour or density. It also offers exceptional characteristics such as fire resistance (classification B-s1, d0), the absence of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, and suitability for use in spaces with sanitary requirements, such as hospitals, laboratories or catering environments.

Safety for the transformer

At Krion, we are highly committed to the care of our workers and those who handle our material. Therefore, during the transformation process of Krion® Solid Surface, we ensure that all safety protocols are followed.

Our workers are adequately protected at all times during the transformation of our surfaces. Therefore, depending on the work to be performed, the workplace and the concentration of dust, Krion workers always wear the appropriate PPE.

However, no special equipment is required for the treatment and handling of Krion. This is because Krion is a non-toxic material at any stage of its use, transformation and handling, so only basic PPE is required for its treatment.

SiO2 Free Certification

Silicosis is a respiratory disease caused by prolonged inhalation of dust containing crystalline silica, a mineral found in some building materials. This disease can cause serious long-term health problems, so prevention is essential in any work environment where materials that release this type of dust are handled. Krion® Solid Surface has SiO2 Free certification, a distinction awarded by the National Silicosis Institute (INS). This certification guarantees that our material is free of crystalline silica, eliminating any risk of exposure to toxic dust generated by the handling of materials containing this compound.

Therefore, given that the dust resulting from cutting and sanding Krion® is non-toxic, the protective equipment required for its handling is the same as for any other non-toxic dust.

However, even though we are certain that we are working with a safe and guaranteed material, at KRION we regularly analyse our transformation processes to improve safety wherever possible.

Preventive measures for working with Solid Surface

To ensure a safe working environment when handling Krion® Solid Surface, it is essential to follow certain preventive measures that protect workers from exposure to particles and vapours generated during the transformation process.

Safety for the end user

In addition to being safe for the worker/processor, Krion is also a safe option for the end user. It has no toxic hazards associated with it as a finished material. This has earned our solid surface many product certifications.

Product certifications

  1. The Health Product Declaration (HPD) verified by SCS Global Services. This certification demonstrates that KrionⓇ does not contain any hazardous components.

  2. Declare is a label for transparency and disclosure of content and health in construction protocols that follows the requirements of the Living Building Challenge. Krion has this label because it is a transparent company in terms of the composition of its surfaces.

  3. KrionⓇ has been evaluated by an accredited external laboratory and has obtained the BPA free label. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an organic compound used in the manufacture of plastics and is suspected of being harmful to humans. The KrionⓇ formula does not contain BPA, nor is it present in any of the raw materials used.

  4. KrionⓇ complies with the European REACH regulation, which aims to ensure the protection of human health and the environment by regulating chemicals that are manufactured or included in finished products.

  5. Greenguard is a certificate awarded by the Greenguard Environmental Institute, which guarantees that Krion Ⓡ complies with indoor air quality standards with regard to volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These seals guarantee that Krion products are suitable for use in educational and healthcare environments, which are the most restrictive.

  6. Since 1 January 2012, construction products used in France must be labelled with a classification based on VOC emissions. Krion Ⓡ has obtained the highest rating (A+), which guarantees low emissions, preserving the environmental quality of the interior of buildings.

Thanks to these certifications, Krion® LUX is an ideal material for sensitive environments such as healthcare facilities. In addition to being non-toxic and BPA-free, it is also bacteriostatic, which means it prevents the growth of bacteria, making it a highly safe and reliable option for applications where hygiene and health are essential.

Safety for the environment

We cannot talk about the safety of KrionⓇ without mentioning the environment. Environmental toxicology studies the damage that a substance can cause to living organisms. At Krion, we have conducted tests and obtained various certifications from accredited independent laboratories to confirm that our material and by-products are completely inert to the environment.

In terrestrial ecosystems, KrionⓇ and the dust derived from its processing have been shown to have no negative effect on biotic or abiotic elements in the terrestrial environment. And in aquatic ecosystems, the same is true.

The tests carried out have demonstrated the safety of KrionⓇ on organisms and have also shown that Krion does not accidentally release any elements into the natural environment.

All the certifications, studies and tests carried out on Krion products demonstrate that it is a safe material for our factory workers during its processing, for the end user during its useful life and for the environment
